The three men were planning to spend the day on Bald Eagle Lake, and were riding together Sunday morning on an eight-wheel ATV packed with supplies, when the ice beneath them suddenly cracked.

The ice was only about an inch thick, and luckily their ATV floated, giving them time to call 911. Rescuers from the Ramsey County Water Patrol broke up the ice with an airboat in order to pull the ATV onto shore.

None of the men went into the water and nobody was injured. Rescuers say this should be a warning that local lakes are still risky, especially with this winter's warm weather.

"We talk to some people asking if conditions are safe to go out," said Ramsey County Sgt. Eric Braudt. "And the simple answer to that is absolutely not."

Bald Eagle Lake, like other lakes, has thick ice in some places and thin ice in others. The Department of Natural Resources says ice should be at least four inches thick, but no ice is completely safe.
